NPP Supremo recalls his jail days with Nazir Sheikh

JAMMU, FEB. 25: Prof. Bhim Singh, Chief Patron NPP and human rights lawyer expressed deep shock on the 'unfortunate' death of Shri Sheikh Nazir who passed away a day earlier.  Prof. Bhim Singh in his condolence message to the family and friends of Sheikh Nazir said that he (Bhim Singh) has lost a friend with human heart and universal vision.

 He recalled that he came across Sheikh Nazir in the Central Jail Jammu in 1961 when he (Bhim Singh) was detained under National Safety Act by Bakshi` government for lowering state flag in honour of Mahraja Hari Singh who died exile in Bombay and the state government refused to lower the state flag half mast in honour of the Dogra king.  Prof. Bhim Singh met Sheikh Nazir who was detained with under trials in a barrack in the jail as class-C detune. Prof. Bhim Singh was class-A detune with Raj Kumar Sehgal in a special detention room in the jail.  Prof. Bhim Singh got Sheikh Nazir shifted from his Class-C barrack to his cell.  He remembered that the Sheikh Nazir spent six months with him in his special cell where he shared food and A Class facilities with Sheikh Nazir.  He described Sheikh Nazir as a soft spoken, very-very friendly and great humanist as he knew him in the jail and after.  Prof. Bhim Singh protested strongly to Bakshi government for maltreating Sheikh Nazir as under trial prisoner only because he was closely related to Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah who was detained in some other jails outside the state. 

Prof. Bhim Singh said that he and Raj Kumar were shifted from Jammu Central Jail to Kathua as a matter of punishment. Prof. Bhim Singh joined hundreds of old friends of Sheikh Nazir in paying him heavy tributes on his unfortunate demise. 

In his condolence message he prayed for heavens for the departed soul.  He said that Sheikh Nazir was the rearest of the rear human beings whom he knew in his interaction for the past over half a century.
